By enabling a direct air route between Australia and Palau, the Palau Paradise Express has become a key enabler for regional cooperation across aviation, tourism, and related sectors.
Palau Paradise Express Inaugural Flight Marks a New Era in Connectivity
In December 2024, the first Qantas-operated Palau Paradise Express flight from Brisbane to Palau touched down at Roman Tmetuchl International Airport, marking a major milestone in regional connectivity. Departing Brisbane at 2pm and arriving at 7pm, the inaugural flight fittingly coincided with International Civil Aviation Day — a celebration of the critical role aviation plays in linking Pacific Island nations.
Aviation Feasibility Study Strengthens Future Planning
Shortly after, in mid-2024, Australian aviation consultancy Airbiz used the newly established route to travel to Palau for an in-depth aviation feasibility study. With support from the Australian Embassy, Airbiz consulted widely across the aviation and tourism sectors. Their work is informing a 20-year forecast for passenger and aircraft movements, assessing infrastructure capacity, and identifying practical improvements to optimise airport operations, diversify revenue, and address climate change risks.
Tourism Growth Powered by Palau Paradise Express
On Global Tourism Resilience Day in February 2025, the Australian Embassy celebrated the strength of Palau’s tourism sector and its ongoing partnership with the Palau Visitors Authority. The Palau Paradise Express enabled familiarisation tours for Australian trade and media representatives, helping to grow tourism and promote Palau as a sustainable travel destination.
Safer Seas Through Aviation-Enabled Collaboration
Most recently, in March 2025, the air service helped connect hydrographic experts and government officials from across the region for the 22nd South West Pacific Hydrographic Commission (SWPHC) meeting. Chaired by Australia and hosted in Palau, the meeting strengthened regional cooperation in hydrography — essential for safer marine transport, national security, and environmental protection.
From its inaugural landing to enabling technical studies, tourism growth, and maritime safety, the Palau Paradise Express demonstrates the value of regional aviation routes — helping build a more connected, resilient, and sustainable Pacific.
