Stakeholders in Kiritimati and Tarawa are playing a central role in shaping the future of air connectivity in Kiribati.
Kiribati’s main airports are located at Bonriki in South Tarawa (TRW) and Cassidy on Kiritimati island (CXI), with an additional 17 airstrips on outer islands. The Government of Australia through P4A is supporting the Government of Kiribati to prepare a new 20-year community, sustainable and commercial masterplan for both airports.
Building on initial consultations held in February, the Ministry of Information, Communications and Transport convened recent discussions with community members and government agencies to collaboratively review the draft masterplans for Cassidy and Bonriki International Airports. The consultations sought to ensure the Masterplans meet the future needs of all i-Kiribati.
The two Masterplans present a strategic vision for the airports’ development over the next 20 years, with a focus on enhancing international and domestic travel capacity. It reflects a shared commitment to improving connectivity, supporting sustainable tourism, and fostering economic resilience across Kiribati and to the rest of the world.
In Tarawa, community consultations on the Bonriki and Cassidy Airport masterplans engaged key ministries including Lands and Planning, and Tourism, Commerce and Trade alongside aviation stakeholders committed to Kiribati’s aviation future
In Kiritimati, consultations on the Cassidy International Airport masterplan brought together women’s groups, NGOs, and government representatives including customs. Discussions centred on redevelopment priorities, with a strong focus on the needs of women and persons with disabilities ensuring inclusive planning for a more accessible future.
The Cassidy and Bonriki Airport masterplanning team funded through Australia-Pacific Partnerships for Aviation was delighted to meet with key stakeholders and community groups on the draft masterplan.
