Congratulations to Barnson Daniel from the Federated states of Micronesia, as he undertakes bachelor’s degree in aviation management through the Australia Awards Program, the first P4A-supported scholar from FSM.
What inspired you to apply for the Australia Awards and choose aviation as your field of study, and how did you prepare yourself for the application process?
“I was inspired to apply for the Australia Awards because I saw it as a valuable opportunity to continue my education and gain knowledge that I can bring back to support the aviation sector in the FSM. I chose a Bachelor of Aviation Management because I work as an Aerodrome Flight Information Coordinator at Pohnpei Port Authority. It was also the first time this type of scholarship was offered, so I decided to take the opportunity. I was also motivated to apply because I want to learn more and return home with knowledge and skills that can help contribute to the betterment of my country. To prepare for the application process, I carefully reflected on my personal goals, why the scholarship was important to me, and how it would help me contribute positively to FSM in the future. I focused on being honest about my journey, clear about my future plans, and confident in the reasons for my application.”
What are you most looking forward to both academically and personally and how are you feeling about studying in a new environment?
Academically, I am looking forward to learning more about aviation management and gaining knowledge that will help me grow in the field and prepare me. I want to better understand how aviation systems and airport operations work, and how good management can support safety and efficiency. Personally, I am looking forward to the experience of living and studying in a new environment, meeting new people, and learning how to adapt. It feels both exciting and challenging. Being in a new place is a big change for me, but I see it as an opportunity to grow and make the most of this journey.
How do you see this opportunity supporting your long-term goals, and what contribution do you hope to make to the FSM and Palau aviation sector when you return?
I see this opportunity as an important step toward my long-term goals because it provides the knowledge, skills, and exposure I need to grow in the aviation field. Studying aviation management is helping me build a stronger understanding of airport operations, leadership, and how aviation can better support Island countries like FSM. When I return, I hope to use what I have learned to contribute to the FSM aviation sector, support higher standards, and share knowledge that benefits the workforce and the country. I want to be part of the positive development of aviation in FSM and help create better services for our people.
What advice would you give to young FSM students who are considering applying next year, especially those interested in the aviation sector?
I would encourage young FSM students to believe in themselves and take the chance to apply. Opportunities like this do not come often, and they can truly change your life. This egree prepares you to become a leader, build confidence, and sharpen your skills to make the right choices. Aviation is fun, adventurous, and always moving forward. It connects people, creates opportunities, and teaches you new things every day. At first, stepping into a new environment may feel scary, but learning new skills will help you grow. I encourage everyone to take the next step, start their journey, and fly.
