The Australian Bureau of Meteorology’s International Development Program is partnering with the Nauru Hydrological and Meteorological Service (NHMS) and the Nauru Department of Transport (Civil Aviation) with support from the Australia-Pacific Partnerships for Aviation (P4A) program to build capacity in Nauru for the provision of aviation weather services.
A team of Nauruan, Australian government and private industry experts recently completed the installation of an Automated Weather Observing Station (AWOS) at Nauru International Aerodrome. This AWOS is the first of its kind for Nauru and represents a significant increase in weather-related situational awareness for observers, air traffic control staff, and pilots.
New PC terminals display wind speed and direction, temperature, humidity, pressure, visibility, lightning, and cloud base data in real-time at both the NHMS observation office (for weather observers) and the Nauru Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT; for air traffic controllers).
This AWOS and added support from NHMS will support pilots and other aviation personnel who make critical safety decisions with continuous, real-time reports on aerodrome weather conditions in Nauru.
